All you need to know about UNIQ lifting slings

A complete guide to the characteristics, types and recommendations for safe and effective use of our slings.

At Damesa we pride ourselves on delivering the highest quality products. Our UNIQ polyester slings reflect our commitment to excellence and safety in lifting.

An introduction to lifting slings

Textile slings are flexible lifting tools that are essential in industry. They can be sewn flat woven webbing or cores of high tenacity industrial yarns covered by a tubular weave. These slings are used to connect loads to crane hooks and move heavy objects up to 10 tons, such as those in our UNIQ range.

General lifting sling properties

  • Polyester Material: Polyester slings are known for their excellent tensile strength, durability and UV resistance. Polyester is a synthetic material that offers an optimum combination of flexibility and strength, making it an ideal choice for heavy and continuous lifting applications.
  • Working Load Limit (WLL) Colors: At Damesa we use a standardized color coding system to quickly identify the maximum working load of our slings. Each color corresponds to a specific WLL:
    • 🟣 Violet: 1,000 kg.
    • 🟢 Green: 2,000 kg
    • 🟡 Yellow: 3,000 kg
    • 🔘 Grey: 4.000 kg
    • 🔴 Red: 5.000 kg
    • 🟤 Brown: 6.000 kg
    • 🔵 Blue: 8.000 kg
    • 🟠 Orange: 10.000 kg

Lifting sling types

  • Flat slings: These double-layered textile webbing with reinforced loops allow loads to be attached using various lifting accessories such as shackles or hooks. It is important to pay attention to the marking, which includes important information such as the name of the manufacturer or the CMU.
  • Round slings: Whether standard or with loops, they are based on a tubular weaves that protects the internal fibres, preventing direct contact with the load and wear due to friction. This makes them flexible and adaptable to different lifting applications.

Safety requirements

  • Lifting sling materials: Textile slings are made from high tenacity industrial yarns of polyamide (PA), polyester (PES) or polypropylene (PP). These materials have specific mechanical properties and behavior depending on their exposure to heat or chemicals.
  • Utilisation coefficient value: The coefficient of utilisation varies depending on whether the slings are reusable or not. For reusable slings the coefficient should be at least 7 and for non-reusable slings between 5 and 7, depending on how they are used.

Selection of lifting slings

Three factors must be taken into account when deciding which sling to use:

  • The total weight of the load: We must choose the sling that provides a Working Load Limit (WLL) equal to or greater than the total weight of the load.
  • Shape of the load: The way the load is attached will affect the WWL of the sling, so we must check the label or our product data sheet for details of the strength of the sling according to the shape of the load.
  • Working environment: The resistance of the sling material to the temperature and chemicals of the environment in which it will be used must be considered. In the case of our polyester slings, we will always work in temperatures between -40°C and +100°C, as well as highlighting its chemical resistance to acids and micro-organisms, always counting on a regular inspection to detect any signs of deterioration or degradation.

Recommendations for use

  • Inspection and maintenance: Before and after each use, it is essential to carry out a detailed visual inspection to detect any defects, wear or damage that could compromise lifting safety. In addition, a thorough annual inspection by competent personnel is recommended to ensure the integrity and performance of the slings.
  • Storage: Store slings in a dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight and ultraviolet light. Perform a visual inspection prior to storage. We invite you to consult our YouTube tutorial on how to inspect slings to ensure safety in your operations.
