Uses and characteristics of UNIQ Heavy Duty Bow Shackles

Discover the LIRA UNIQ (GLAR) heavy duty shackle, ideal for securing loads in industrial and construction environments. Thanks to its design, it offers the maximum guarantee of safety.

When it comes to securing and handling loads with precision and safety in industrial environments or in the construction sector, the UNIQ Heavy Duty Bow Shackle (GLAR) is an indispensable accessory.

This shackle is designed to withstand demanding lifting tasks and acts as a vital intermediate connection between eyebolts, hooks and slings, ensuring the integrity and efficiency of operations.

It is important to note that they are for industrial use only (cable and chain joints) and are not considered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Features of heavy duty D-shackles

Focusing on its features, the heavy-duty bow shackle is distinguished by its robust design, resulting from the combination of a bow or ring shape with a red-coloured bolt.

The materials that make up the structure of the UNIQ high strength shackle (C45 steel and high strength alloy steel) allow the lifting of large working loads with a shackle that is smaller in volume than a conventional shackle, making it easier to handle.

In this model of shackle, the bow or eye and the bolt do not have the same diametral dimension, the diameter of the bolt being slightly larger.

Applications of heavy duty lyre shackles

As mentioned in the previous section, this shackle not only secures loads on slings, but it is also a fantastic choice when attaching chains to traction devices, whether for immobilising, moving, lifting or pulling. However, it is important to note that its use is recommended for non-permanent tasks.

However, GLART shackles can be used for permanent, long-lasting or potentially moving assemblies.

In order to achieve a more balanced load, it is used especially with slings with two or more configuration strands, but always taking into account the angle of action. The greater the angle used, the greater the load for each strand, affecting the load on the shackle itself.

Comparison with other types of shackles

There are several types of shackles on the market, each with specific features and applications:

Bow Shackle: Curved design that distributes the load better and allows greater mobility. Ideal for multi-strand slings.

D-Shackle: Its linear design makes it more suitable for loads aligned in a straight line, with less mobility.

Double Swivel Shackle: Incorporates a mechanism that prevents twisting, ideal for dynamic applications.

Twisted Shackles: Allows angle adjustment, providing flexibility in industrial applications.

Heavy Duty Shackle: Withstands extreme loads due to its alloy steel construction, used in demanding lifting applications.

Nut and Cotter Pin Shackle: Includes an additional locking system, ideal for fixed installations.

Tips and precautions about heavy duty lyre shackles

As with any element used in securing and handling loads accurately and safely in industrial environments, it is important to take the appropriate precautions. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • The maximum working load (S.W.L. // C.M.U. // W.L.L.L.) indicated for each dimension must always be observed.
  • Always check that all markings are legible before use.
  • Ensure that the bolt is correctly threaded into the shackle eye.
  • Do not use a shackle that is misaligned, not threaded properly, deformed or cracked.
  • Never replace a bolt that does not have the same mechanical characteristics and material composition.
  • A shackle should never be machined, repaired or refurbished as this may affect its maximum working load.

Guaranteed Durability and Efficiency

We come to the end of this article, remembering that the UNIQ GLAR model stands out for its high-strength alloy steel composition. Thanks to this characteristic, it can handle considerable loads without sacrificing control and manoeuvrability. Finally, despite the slightly larger diametral dimension of the bolt in relation to the bow, its design is perfectly adapted to the most demanding industrial needs.
